  • ½ cup chopped prunes
  • ½ cup chopped dried cherries
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1½ cups granulated sugar
  • ¼ cup cocoa powder
  • 4 cups Dr. Pepper soda (for frosting)
  • 1½ cups unsalted butter

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking pan.
  2. In one bowl, combine the dry ingredients: flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, nutmeg, ginger, and allspice.
  3. In another bowl, beat the butter and sugar until creamy; add eggs, buttermilk, and vanilla extract.
  4. Gradually add the Dr. Pepper soda to the wet mixture along with chopped prunes and cherries.
  5. Combine wet and dry mixtures gently until just blended.
  6. Pour batter into the prepared pan and bake for about 34 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  7. Allow the cake to cool completely before preparing the frosting by melting butter in a saucepan and mixing in ground ginger, confectioners' sugar, and Dr. Pepper until smooth.
  8. Frost the cooled cake evenly with the frosting.
