  • 180 grams granulated sugar
  • 240 grams plain yogurt
  • 115 grams melted butter or ghee
  • 5 grams baking powder
  • Zest of 2 medium oranges
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 480 ml water
  • 350 grams granulated sugar
  • 15 ml lemon juice
  • 15 ml orange blossom water or orange juice

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 175°C (350°F) and grease a 23 cm (9 inch) round cake pan.
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine semolina, sugar, baking powder, and orange zest.
  3. Add yogurt, melted butter, and vanilla extract; mix until smooth.
  4. Pour batter into the prepared pan and score it into diamond shapes if desired.
  5. Bake for 30-40 minutes until a toothpick comes out clean.
  6. While baking, prepare the syrup by combining water, sugar, and lemon juice in a saucepan; bring to a gentle boil.
  7. Once cooled slightly, stir in orange blossom water or juice.
  8. Pour warm syrup over the hot cake as soon as it comes out of the oven.
  9. Allow the cake to cool completely before serving.
