  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon caraway seeds (optional)
  • ½ cup vegetable broth or water
  • 1½ cups all-purpose flour
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 large egg
  • ½ cup milk (plus more if needed)
  • 1 tablespoon butter (for finishing)
  • Optional: chopped parsley or chives for garnish

Instructions

  1. In a large skillet or Dutch oven, melt butter over medium heat. Add the onion and sauté for about 4–5 minutes until softened.
  2. Stir in the chopped cabbage along with salt, pepper, and optional caraway seeds. Cook for 10–12 minutes while occasionally stirring.
  3. Pour in the vegetable broth or water, cover tightly, and simmer for another 10 minutes.
  4. In a mixing bowl, combine flour and salt. Beat in the egg and add milk gradually until you form a soft dough.
  5. Drop spoonfuls of dough into the simmering cabbage mixture. Cover and steam for about 10–12 minutes until dumplings are cooked through.
  6. Gently stir in the remaining butter before serving hot.
